The American Dental Association (ADA) celebrates the
Children’s Dental Health Month this February. This event is to raise awareness
about the importance of oral health most especially to children. This year
2014, the event features the slogan “Join the Super Smile Team!”
The growth of children is very vital and having dental care
is important for them. This is the time when dental health is significantly
necessary to be given attention. The proper care for children’s teeth is
important and activities like brushing and flossing daily is essential for a
healthy smile.
There are different activities that children need to
remember when taking care of their oral health. Children need to take in a
variety of nutrient-rich foods in order to have healthier teeth. Parents should
provide their children with calcium-rich foods like low-fat or fat-free milk,
yogurt and cheese, fortified soy and rice drinks, salmon and dark green leafy
vegetables. These products contribute to a strong teeth as well as bones. Thus,
parents or elders must guide their children on the foods that they take in.
One dental problem that children experiences now is the
presence of tooth decay. According to the National Centers for Disease Control
and Prevention (CDC), there are 18 percent of children aged two to four
suffering from tooth decay. From this, there are nearly one out of six have
untreated tooth decay. Tooth decay has become a chronic childhood disease and
has become very common. This should not be taken for granted because children
suffering from this condition may easily be hospitalized or even worse conditions
may happen.
“We see kids every single day with large cavities. We see
kids that we take to the operating room, just because the decay can be so
extensive and it can be life-threatening,” according to Dr. Cox, a
local pediatric dentist at the Pediatric Dental Specialist.
